OLD K&B .40 Inboard Trouble

Postby Arctic Cat Rider » Wed Apr 29, 2009 10:06 am

I came across an old K&B .40 inboard. It's the ringed version with a baffle on the top of the piston. It's loop scavenged...

This engine is so old there's no mounting holes for a muffler. Just the exhaust port.

The compression is good..equivalent to a new .40, however when I start it up I get a lot of oil out the front bearing. I referred to the FAQ, and found a link which suggested checking for a stuck ring...and unsticking it so excessive blow by doesn't force oil out the front.

Wouldn't the compression suffer if the ring was stuck and not sealing??
I plan on further disassembly of the motor tonight.....and looking at the ring...but if that doesn't work, what's next??

Thanks,
Dan

Some oil out the front is desirable. That's how the shaft and bearings are lubricated. The seal is made by the crankshaft to case fit. If that area is worn there is nothing you can do about it. If the engine runs all right don't worry about oil coming out the front end.
