Help Identify Old Engine

Postby BigJim » Sat Dec 08, 2007 8:59 pm

Hi: I need some help in identifying this engine. Seems to be in good condition but I can find no manufacturers mark (though it coiuld be hiding behind the engine mount).

That is an older Fox motor but I don't know what model or displacement.

You should edit your picture links and remove "src=" from each line to enable the pictures to show properly.

Jim,

That's a Fox 40 or 45 BB Schnuerle from the mid-late 1970's. (Small wart bypass bump was later replaced with a longer, smooth one.)

If its the 45, that's probably stamped on one of the mount lugs, if not, more likely the 40.

They were done as both lapped piston, and with the later case, as Dykes ringed. A bit heavy, but good power. Stock, it likes to rev a bit. VERY durable if handled right.

The Fox carb is actually quite good, but takes a different approach to set up. Fox factory may still have 'the papers' on this one. Might be worth a phone call.

If it's the lapped piston version, remember that lapped piston Fox engines like ample Castor in the fuel - 25% is safe for a well broken in example.

Try props around 12-4, 12-5 and go from there...

Luck!
