I am after the best way to degum a diesel engine that has be laying around for years any help would be great

I ususally let them sit in acetone or some engine degreaser overnight - being carful to remove any parts (plastic) that may be adversely afected first. I then use an electric heat gun and WD40 to free the internals before disassembly. Make sure the piston is free to move up and down before unscrewing the fins/cylinder (if the engine is made this way) otherwise a twisted/broken con-rod will result.

soak it in tin of Radiator coolant for a few days[glycol]
