Newby needs help with O&R 60

Postby Chiefy » Sat Dec 06, 2008 2:07 pm

I'm into the vintage side of Tether Car Racing and I've picked up an old O&R 60 to power a car that I'm building to 1948 plans.

The engine is incomplete and seized but I'm up for the challenge of get it going again.

My engine is the same as the one pictured in an earlier thread http://www.modelengine.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4637 but the serial number is 059721

The bits that are missing are; the clear fuel tank,it's top and filler, the jet cw knurled nut, fuel pick up pipe and spark plug.

I've got the "Aero-electric catalogue but can't identify the parts I need, can anyone assist.

Plus any suggestions of other parts I should get in to support the rebuild, like gaskets etc.

I guess I could also use a manual.

Any help would be appreciated.

Chiefy, First off the cylinder & intake pipe are not removeable ! Most cylinders need repainting so I use a propane torch to heat them up with a old prop on & turn it backwards to loosen. May need some spray lube to help it some also . The engine is a 1948 large exhaust & intake pipe (7/16") The parts you need from Aero-Electric are .
6011 fuel tank top
6012 needle valve tube for a 7/16" intake
6044-1044 clicker spring ( if you don't have it)
6046-1046 washer & nut
6010 fuel tank
1017 jiffy fill cap
1018 fill cap spring
6013 front cover gasket
Engine uses a "V" plug 3/8"X 24 thread ( I think Lucas made them in England & maybe others ?) IM-62 is the manual # Good luck ,MAX :D H. :D

Max

Thank you for the assistance.

I'll start on the strip down now and wait until after the holidays before I order from Woody (too much chance of stuff getting lost over Christmas)

I really appreciate your help.

Chiefy,
The most important factor in your plans to run this engine is DO NOT USE ALCOHOL-BASED FUELS!!! The plastic tank can withstand only petroleum fluids and will melt or distort if anything else is tried. Metal replacement tanks are available for other fuels.
The recommended fuel is 3:1 gasoline (petrol,) : SAE 70 weight motor oil. Some people use Coleman fuel and are quite successful.
